October Book Group

This month’s books is “The Walk Home” by Rachel Seiffert. The book group will meet on Tuesday 13th October at 7pm in Vibes and Scribes, 21 Lavitt’s Quay.

9781844089956“Stevie comes from a long line of people who have cut and run. Just like he has. Stevie’s been to London, taught himself to get by, and now he’s working as a labourer not so far from his childhood home in Glasgow.

But he’s not told his family – what’s left of them – that he’s back. Not yet. He’s also not far from his Uncle Eric’s house: another one who left – for love this time.

Stevie’s toughened himself up against that emotion. And as for his own mother, Lindsey …well, she ran her whole life. From her father and Ireland, from her husband, and eventually from Stevie too.

This is a powerful novel about the risk of love, and the madness and betrayals that can split a family. If you cut your ties, will you cut yourself adrift? Rachel Seiffert is an extraordinarily deft and humane writer who tells us the truth about love and about hope.”

August Book Group

For August’s book group we will be reading “Island: Collected Stories” by Alistair MacLeod.

51iDbC9xr1L._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_“These slow, beautiful stories – resolute and resonant – are small masterpieces: apparently simple but actually crafted with enormous skill and precision. Set against the unforgiving landscape of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, they are all concerned with the complexities and mysteries of the human heart, the unbreakable bonds and unbridgeable chasms between man and woman, parent and child. Steeped in memory and myth and washed in the brine and blood of the long battle with the land and the sea, these stories celebrate a passionate engagement with the natural world and a continuity of the generations in the face of transition, in the face of love and loss.

July Book Group

The book we’ll be reading for July is ‘Death in the City of Light by David King.

9780751548457“A swastika crowns the Eiffel Tower. Nazis march through the streets.

And in the dark heart of the city, a madman is at work …At a chic Right Bank address, a horrific pile of dismembered bodies is discovered. The property’s owner, well-to-do Dr Petiot, immediately becomes the prime suspect, but he has vanished without a trace. As the police delve into the doctor’s past, a disturbing history of violence and corruption is uncovered.

It seems like a cut-and-dried case, but the investigation soon takes a surprising turn. Is Petiot a sadistic serial killer or a hero of the Resistance? Who are his victims? In this fascinating true account of a case that gripped wartime Paris, David King draws extensively on new sources to paint a chilling portrait of a murderer whose crimes devastated a city already in the grip of evil.”
