Olga Suvorova (Russian, b. 1966)
Annunciation, 2015
Olga Suvorova’s Annunciation follows a long tradition of reverential artworks depicting the announcement by the angel Gabriel to Mary that she will conceive the Son of God. The ornate costumes—silk and velvet, jeweled and embroidered—are complemented by vibrant flowers and birds, including the symbolic white dove and lilies. The result is a lush tapestry, delicate in feeling but full of undeniably boisterous color.
Suvorova, who comes from a family of artists, studied monumental composition at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. She is known for her portraiture, both at home in Russia and around the world.
