Quilled Bird

This colorful paper bird is made from quilling paper strips using the quilling technique, a quilling pen and a quilling board.

You Will Need:

- QUILLING PAPER STRIPS (HERE)

- A QUILLING PEN (PEN)

- A QUILLING BOARD (HERE)

- A CLEAR GLUE, SUCH AS I-TACK ORIGINAL ALL PURPOSE GLUE (GLUE)

Instructions:

1. Place a quilling paper strip in the metal slot at the tip of the quilling pen and roll tight to make a compact coil.

2. Place the compact paper coil in quilling board. Place it in the mould that matches the circumference of the coil.

3. After a while, remove the coil from the quilling board using two fingers. Let the coil slightly unravel and move it to a larger mould in the quilling board and secure with pins.

4. After a short while, carefully remove the coil from the quilling board and add a few blobs of glue to keep the shape.

5. Use a 30cm long quilling paper strip for the bird's body and tail feather. Also shorten three quilling paper strips to approx. 10-11cm for each tail feather.


Glue each individual tail feather end  together (individually), to make teardrop shapes. Bend one end of the long quilling paper strip and make a tail feather so it is the same length as the other three tail feathers. Glue all four tail feathers together.

6. Now bend the long quilling paper strip into a teardrop shape towards the four-way tail and secure it with a blob of glue.

7. Make the bird's eye from three coloured strips, which are glued together end to end. First a 5cm long black strip for the pupil, then a 20cm long white strip and finally a full length orange strip.

8. Roll this composite strip and place it in one of the mould in the quilling board.

9. The wings are made by glueing two long quilling paper strips together (two different colours). Roll the long strip and place it in largest mould in the quilling board. After a while, carefully remove the coil from the quilling board, squeeze it gently into shape and secure the end with a blob of glue.

NB! Glue between several of the outer paper layer near the joint.

10. Roll a quilling paper strip fro the beak and place it in the quilling board. Then squeeze it into shape and secure it with glue. Now assemble all the coils in the bird's body. Add glue onto the coils and place them against eachother inside the body. Also add glue to the inside of the outer paper strip. Let it dry and attach a white piece of mercerised cotton cord for hanging.
